The Himalayan Club, Kolkata Section is going to organise Rock Climbing Course from 17th to 20th February, 2024 at
Susunia Hill, Dist. Bankura. It is 13.6 km from Chhatna Railway Station.
There will be a maximum of 30 trainees from age group above 14. Instructors, transportation, shelter and food will
be provided by us.
The Himalayan Club is the second oldest mountaineering club in the world (Estd. 1928) which is actively involved in mountaineering exploration, expedition and publication of Himalayan Journal for more than 90 years. In addition, this prestigious organisation also extended its activities to train younger generation in various fields like rock climbing, camping, trekking, nature study and conservation.-
Rock climbing is about challenging and pushing oneself; it makes him or her stop thinking about competing and getting approval from others. Rock climbing boosts physical health such as building endurance, muscle and flexibility. It also has positive outcomes on mental strength, reduces stress.
Rock climbing as a sport began in England in the late 1880s. Since then it is gaining immense popularity throughout the world. Free Solo, a documentary film on Alex Honnold, one of the greatest rock climbers in the world have won several awards including Oscar in 2018. Sport climbing, a form of rock climbing will make its Olympic debut at Tokyo Summer Olympics 2020 as a competitive event.
Experienced instructors of Himalayan Club, Kolkata Section will provide the trainees an amazing experience along with a sense of victory over fear. Coming out of the comfort zone, the trainees will know that they challenged
themselves, tested their fears, physical limitations and mental abilities
The Rock climbing course will comprise both theoretical and practical sessions during these four days.
Usually each day starts in early morning after bed tea, with warming up and basic toning of the body through light P.T.; practical training start thereafter.
After breakfast, the trainees, grouped in different ropes, move to different rock walls of varying height and
inclinations, where they are taught to climb these rocks with skill, style and safety. These rocks ranges from small boulders, to longer pitches of gradually increasing difficulty and also some overhangs.
After climbing different types of faces, abseiling is taught that includes rappelling down the rock walls with help of rope.
Theory classes include different subjects pertaining to Rock climbing like Ropes and Knots, mountain hazards and how to avoid them, acquaintance with various types of climbing equipment and their uses and many more.
The entire course is compactly knitted in a routine with strict timings and with full discipline.
It also encompass entertainment for the trainees through variety of cultural programme by the trainees and the
instructors in the camp fire.
Thus the whole Rock climbing course is a unique blending of physical, mental and cultural activities in a short span of four days that definitely leaves a permanent impression in the mind of everybody participating in the camp.
Rs. 3000/- per participant which includes the travel expenses from Howrah Stn. to the camp site and back (by sleeper class train and reserved bus or jeep) plus the cost of lodging (in tents) and all foods during these four days.
NOTE: Full course fees must be paid in advance along with completed and duly signed enrolment form to confirm participation in the camping course.

The team will start by Hwh BKSC Exp. on 17.02.24, alighting at Chhatna stn. next morning.
Reporting time : 10pm at the Howrah station, in front of Enquiry in new platform.
Shirt/top and trousers – 2sets, undergarment (as per requirement), sweater half, full, jacket, cades/snickers, socks-two pairs, chappal, air pillow, sleeping bag/blanket, plate, mug/glass, spoon, water bottle, torch with spare cell, diary/note book and pen, cotton rope (6mm dia, 2mtrs long), toiletries (Tooth brush, paste, comb, razor, cream etc. as per requirement), camera/musical instruments (optional).
