Library

The Club has acquired 30 books during the year. Second instalments of new books were transferred to Calcutta sub-library for use of members and subsequently to be sent to Delhi in the main Library at India International Centre.

Nanabhai Davar and Mrs Hilla N. Davar have donated their collection of about 700 books in memory of late Dr Edulji N. Davar, to the Himalayan Club. The books will be kept by the Club in Bombay, as stipulated by them, for the use of club Members and added to the Club's library at Bombay. The Committee gratefully acknowledges the kind donation of books by Mr and Mrs Davar.

Grindlays Bank Mountain Scholarship

During the year four persons received Grindlays Bank Mountain Scholarship for mountaineering training at institutes in India.

Club Sponsorship

Rules for Club Sponsorship to expeditions were formed early in the year. The club gave sponsorship to the Satopanth Glacier Expedition 1980, led by S. R. Kulkarni. The expedition climbed a point of 20,100 ft on the ridge leading to Parvati Parbat which was their main objective.

SECTIONAL ACTIVITIES

Bombay

15 February : Dr Asit R. Gokli showed slides of White Peak and Annapurna Sanctuary Expedition covering the trek into Modi Khola and climbs on the slopes of Hiunchuli and Tent Peak. The expedition climbed White Peak (17,262 ft) on 7 June 1979 from the Dhaulagiri icefall.

4 March : Harish Kapadia showed slides of his recent Himalayan expeditions. The programme was organised under joint auspices with Row Dayal Trust.

19 March : Dr (Ms) Meena Agrawal gave a slide-illustrated talk on Ladies Kamet Expedition 1978.

21 April : Sat Paul Sahni gave a slide-illustrated talk on Ladakh.

16 May : Trevor Braham showed slides of Karakoram depicting his travels and mountaineering in that region.

21 June : 'Conquest of Kangchenjunga' and other films were screened at Films Division.

4 July : J. C. Nanavati gave a slide-illustrated talk 'Western Ghats to Himalaya', under joint auspices with Row Dayal Trust.

19 September : Ms Meher Moos presented an audio-visual talk on her jouri^^Jo the Antarctic. Programme arranged by the kind courtesy otRow Dayal Trust.

8 October: Shashank Kulkarni, leader of the Satopanth Glacier Expedition, 1980, gave a slide-illustrated talk. The expedition was sponsored by the Himalayan Club.

Calcutta

The following talks/slide shows were organised during the year :

  1. Snow-Dome Expedition by S. N. Ray.
  2. Trek to Surya-Kund by D. K. Bannerjee.
  3. Panch Kedar by A. C. Mitter.

Delhi

25 January : Col Baljit Singh gave an illustrated talk on his travels in Ladakh.

6 March : Members were invited to attend the launching of World Conservation Strategy. The programme included an audio-visual presentation on ecology and conservation.

5 July : Ms Arlene Blum, leader of the American Women's Expedition to Annapurna I (1978) gave an illustrated talk.

16 December : A slide-show on Leo Pargial by members of the St Stephen's College Centenary Expedition 1980.

18 December : Film show on ski-ing and other mountain sports in Austria.

CORRECTIONS, VOL. 37

p. 107 Teram Kangri 11 was first climbed by a Japanese team led by H. Katayama on 12 August 1975. The present expedition did not climb 'virgin peak' as claimed.
