Himalayan Journal

With effect from Vol 37 the price of the Journal has been revised to Rs 100/-. The price of back issues of Journals in stock has also been revised to Rs 100/-. At present the Club has Vols 32 to 37 in stock.

Grindlays Bank Mountain Scholarship

During the year 15 persons were awarded scholarships for training in mountaineering at Institutes in India.

Club Sponsorship

Two expeditions were sponsored by the Club during 1981, both le'3 by V. V. Limaye:

  1. Jogin I Expedition
  2. Kabru Dome Expedition

Bob Waller Scholarship and Equipment Grant

Mrs G. E. D. Waller has donated £1500 to the Himalayan Club in memory of her husband late G. E. D. Waller to be utilized as under :

  1. Interest income from £750 for Bob Waller Scholarships for mountaineering training in India.
  2. Interest income from £750 to purchase equipment suitably inscribed in memory of Bob Waller.

SECTIONAL ACTIVITIES

Bombay:

19 March : Manik Bannerjee gave a slide-illustrated talk on his recent expedition to Jogin group of peaks.

9 April: Harish Kapadia showed slides of his trek to Ladakh and Zanskar, 1980.

8 May : S. R. Shah showed slides of his treks in Garhwal, Kumaon and Kashmir.

5 August: P. M. Das gave a talk on the accident on Bhagirathi II and Alpine style climbing camps in India. He also showed slides of his ascent of Bandarpunch.

8 to 13 December: 'Himalayan Club Week' was celebrated. The following programmes were held during the week.

  1. A talk on 'Kabru Dome Expedition' by V. V. Limaye. The expedition attempted Kabru Dome and Frey Peak and made ascent of Palung.
  2. Slide-illustrated talk on 'Treks and Climbs in Dhauladhar' by A. B. Samant.
  3. Harish Kapadia gave a slide-illustrated talk on 'Swetvarn Indo-French Expedition, 1981'. The expedition made the first ascent of Sudarshan Parbat, Chaturbhuj and climbed three other peaks.
  4. Two films, 'Ice-climbing' and 'Everest—Mie Hard Way' were screened.
  5. Romesh Bhattacharji gave a slide-illustrated talk on 'Kailash- Mansarovar, 1981'.

A Club Dinner was held on 11 December, 1981.

22 December: The film 'Ocean to Sky' was screened by the kind courtesy of Air-India.

Calcutta:

February : A. D. Moddie, President of the Club addressed the members.

9 July: Slide-show by B. B. Arnal on 'Ghori Parbat, 1977'.

Delhi:

10 February: Col B. S. Sandhu gave an illustrated talk on treks in Garhwal.

23 February: Harish Kapadia gave an illustrated talk on trek in North Ladakh and Zanskar.

19 March: A slide-show on ascent of Bhrigupanth by the Indo- American Women's Expedition, 1980. Speaker was Rekha Sharma.

6 September: John Jackson gave an illustrated talk on 'Mountains on Foot' and 'Ski-Greenland, Europe, Himalaya'.

4 October: A series of films on mountaineering and ski-ing in the European Alps were screened by the courtesy of Italian Embassy and India International Centre.

22 October : Doug Scott gave an illustrated talk.

7 December: Santosh Kumar gave an illustrated talk on 'Kailash Mansarovar Yatra'.

19 December: Films on Ruwenzori and Kilimanjaro were screened by Dr G. Crespi Reghizzi.

London Reunion

The Annual Reunion of U.K. members of tlhe Club in London, organized by Bob Pettigrew, was held on the 24 April, 1981 at the Oriental Club. John Barry gave a vivid and fascinating talk illustrated by colour slides, entitled, 'Climbing the Eiger of the Himalaya-Gauri Sankar, 23,340 ft Nepal Himalaya'. After the talk some 25 members and guests sat down to dinner at which V. S. Risoe was in the chair.
