FOLLOWING up a newspaper announcement that some of the major Himalayan Peaks had been re-measured, an approach by the secretary was made to the Surveyor-General's Office through the kind offices of Gen. Williams. The reply received indicated that fresh measurements have been taken during the 1952-1954 period, in most cases from closer distances from triangulation stations involving rays of 30 to 50 miles length. In addition to taking into consideration more reliable values of refraction, deflection corrections which were absent in the previous measurements were also introduced. The main corrections have been applied to the following peaks:
Previous height feet | Revised height feet | |
Everest | 29,002 | 29,028 |
Kangchenjunga I | 28,146 | 28,208 |
Lhotse I | 27,890 | 27,923 |
Makalu I | 27,790 | 27,824 |
Manalsu I | 26,658 | 26,760 |
Nuptse | 25,700 | 25,726 |
The heights of other peaks are also likely to undergo revision as and when opportunities for re-computing them in the light of fresh triangulation observations are available. At the moment, however, the following heights remain as official:
