CORRESPONDENCE

2nd January 2006.

Dear Harish,

Volume 61 of the Himalayan Journal has arrived on this island. Congratulations on all the improvements. Excellent choice of paper, captions and maps. The photos are particularly well produced. I found 7 and 8 most interesting showing the Nanda Devi and Kamet group from the 'other side'. Your own photo 9 has fine clarity.(long range photos such as these are compelling)

You have a good team. Your readers are taken far and wide in travels and climbs, Book Reviews and Memoriam. (How splendid that you published John Jackson's article in volume 60.)

Inevitably, the Journal evokes memories.

'Three men in a tent' came to my mind and worked out in a poem. I offer you this as a New Year gift. As it might fill a gap and another dimension in climbing records- you might think it worth a place in volume 62. (See Note 1 in this volume).

An update on improving recovery from total idleness; Five years ago I was fitted a replacement right knee (Spanish), last year a replacement of a loose replacement left hip (German fitting). This year a replacement of the right hip (Swiss fitting). This leaves my left knee as the only natural joint. (British!)

My legs have worked hard and well over my lifetime and now give the promise of going well again on the flat. As you know valley walks can be full of enrichment.

With every good wish upon your travels, writing and photography during this New Year.

Rev. Roy Greenwood
