Kekoo Naoroji Book Award 2013-14

Kekoo Naoroji Book Award

Tony Smythe has won the 8th Kekoo Naoroji Book Award (2013-14) for Himalayan Literature for his book ‘My Father, Frank’.

The jury’s evaluation of the book says,

“This book tops the list because it is a sensitive and intelligent biography of Frank Smythe, one of the greatest British climbers to explore the Himalaya, particularly Garhwal. The fact that it is written by his son makes it an intriguing story, which must have been difficult for the author to write. Tony Smythe has done a remarkable job of remaining as objective as possible about his subject, while offering personal insights into the character and career of a man who was constantly torn between his family and the mountains he loved. The sections about Frank Smythe’s “self-promotion” and literary success, and the jealousy of other climbers of his generation are particularly fascinating. The narrative pulls us along and we come away from the book having learned a lot about Frank Smythe, with a fresh admiration for his accomplishments and for the mountains he explored.”
