Delhi section talk - High Climbs by Pertemba Sherpa

High Climbs by Pertemba Sherpa, organised by The Himalayan Club - Delhi section

The Himalayan Club invites you to an illustrated talk High Climbs by Pertemba Sherpa.

Pertemba Sherpa has climbed Mt. Everest three times, and over an extraordinary career of climbing, guiding and teaching has seen the mountain claim the lives of too many friends. In his talk titled 'High Climbs', Pertemba who was the lead Sherpa with Sir Chris Bonington on the first expedition to climb Everest from its south-west face in 1975 will share multiple stories from this expedition and a number of other major expeditions he has been a part of. Pertemba Sherpa is considered elder of the Nepalese Sherpa people and he will also share his views on the over commercialisation of Mt. Everest and issues related to the environment in the Khumbu area.

Pertemba Sherpa was born in 1949 in Khumjung, Solukhumbu where he started his education in 1961 at a school founded by Edmund Hillary. In 1966 he got a job in the kitchen at Lukla Airport and then moved to Kathmandu to join the first trekking agency in Nepal, Jimmy Roberts' Mountain Travel. He first was a high-altitude porter on a number of expeditions before he became a Sherpa leader.

He has donated his family's ancestral house in Khumjung for it to become the Sherpa Heritage House museum - it is the last traditional house in Solu Khumbu. He has been awarded the Order of Gorkha Dakshina Bahu (first class) by the King of Nepal.

Chris Bonington has described him as being assured and dynamic. He took part as a climber in Chris Bonington's 1970 Annapurna and 1975 Everest Southwest Face expeditions. Chris Bonington said he consulted Pertemba frequently, sometimes to the irritation of the lead climbers, on the best route to be followed.
