Brief Background of Speakers


Cdr. Satyabrata Dam: Cmdr. Dam, an active and experienced mountaineer was former Hon. Local Secretary for the Himalayan Club in Mumbai. He has led several expeditions in the Himalaya including Sujtilla, Kamet, Saser Kangri and Everest. He has also written a detective novel.
Ms. Urmi Popat: Urmi Popat an architect by profession has written a book about her journey to the poles of the earth. Ms. Urmi and her parents are trekking enthusiasts and with a little luck and a lot of perseverance realised their dream of unfolding the tri-colour on the very ends of the earth.
Mr. Divyesh Muni: Mr. Muni is Secretary of the Himalayan Club. Mr. Muni is one of the most experienced mountaineers in India. He has several first ascents to his credit such as Rangrik Rang and Bhujang. He has also climbed several difficult peaks such as Sujtilla, Nandakhani, Nandbanhar, Kamet and many more.
Mr. Anand Palande: Mr. Palande has been trekking and climbing since 1968 in the Sahyadri and the Himalaya. He is the author of five books including “Dongar Yatra”. He has participated in several Himalayan expeditions such as Sri Kailas, Leo Parigal, and Bidhan Parvat.
Mr. Harish Kapadia : An explorer and mountaineer who has visited most parts of the Indian Himalaya in last 40 years. He has led several joint expeditions. He is the editor of the Himalayan Journal since 1975 and has written many books. In 2003 Mr. Kapadia was awarded the prestigious Patron’s medal of the Royal Geographical Society.
Mr. Surendra Chauhan: Mr. Chauhan has been visiting the mountains since the last ten years. His climbing experience includes rock climbing in the Sahyadri to several Himalayan peaks ranging from Satopanth to Everest.
Mr. Suresh Phansare: Is a founder member of Saad Mountaineers and is currently the Secretary of the same. He is a rock climbing instructor and has completed his basic mountaineering course from N.I.M. Mr. Phansare has climbed Lingana pinnacle near Raigad fort and summitted Suli Top. This was the second ascent of Suli Top.
Mr. Hemant Thete: Has been climbing with the Nagpur mountaineers as well as Saad Mountaineers. He has climbed Jogin, Bhagirathi and Kalanag. He also attempted Kamet. Mr. Thete is also associated with ‘Sahas Vaidarbhi’ an organisation dedicated to trekking and adventure activities.
Mr. Sachin Shinde : Mr. Shinde is a rock climber who has climbed the challenging routes of Duke’s Nose and Baan. In 2001 he climbed the Karnala pinnacle 51 times in a single day to raise awareness for the preservation of the Karnala Sanctuary.
